CYSTITIS
Cystitis is one of frequently occurring infections of the lower urinary system, developing both in females (more often) and in males. Its development is sudden, rapid and its course cannot be predicted. It is an inflammatory disease that has a considerably negative impact on the quality of life and reduces work efficiency of the infected person. The main complaint associated with the disease is a burning sensation in the area of urethra and frequent urinary urgency. The sensation of urinary urgency is often unbearable, causes anxiety, and a patient needs to urinate immediately, however only little urine flows out. This condition may be accompanied by pain in the lower part of abdomen.
What causes cystitis?
The condition is not caused by poor personal hygiene and it cannot be transmitted by sexual contacts.
The main cause of cystitis are bacteria occurring naturally in the urinary tract, that pass through the urethra into the bladder.
Favouring conditions? Cystitis may be favoured by sexual intercourse if the bladder wall becomes irritated
- menopause – oestrogen deficiency leads to weakening of the urinary bladder epithelium
- pregnancy – the uterus compresses the urinary bladder
- diabetes
- reduced immunity within the urinary tract.
Is the condition dangerous?- the condition is not dangerous when treated appropriately. It is unpleasant and may require a few days of sick leave. In case of children and elderly patients, inflammation may involve kidneys and cause a permanent damage.
Is the condition recurrent?- yes, recurrences happen, particularly in cases that were improperly treated and in patients with compromised immunity.
